MARIA H. KYRIACOU
  • Maria H. Kyriacou is a graduate of the L.S.E., London University (LL.B., Upper Second and LL.M., Merit award) and of Utrecht University (LL.M.). She has specialized in intellectual property law and European law and has completed her thesis on a topic of EU competition law (cum laude award). 

    She has been practicing law in Cyprus since 2001, specializing in corporate and commercial law, intellectual property law, mergers and acquisitions, restructurings, EU law, competition law and financial services law. Maria has practiced law in various positions of responsibility, acting on the side of a regulator/ administrative authority as well as on the side of private clients.

    Early on in her career she completed a traineeship (‘stage’) with the Second Board of Appeals of the EUIPO in Alicante, Spain and has acted as a legal advisor to the President of the Cyprus Commission for the Protection of Competition. She has since been working in private practice in some of the leading commercial law firms in Cyprus in responsible positions, gaining a deep and varied experience.

    Maria has a broad and in-depth experience on corporate and commercial law transactions. Amongst others, she has successfully handled a dual IPO on AIM and MOEX, has regularly advised on various forms of corporate restructurings, produced corporate due diligence assessments (producing both buyer-side and vendor-side reports) and has handled complex commercial transactions. She has a rich expertise in drafting various types of commercial agreements and regularly issues legal opinions on questions of corporate and commercial law.

    Maria has a wide-ranging knowledge and experience in IP law, with emphasis on national and EU trade mark law and proceedings, covering a broad spectrum of application proceedings (national, EU and international), opposition proceedings, revocation/ invalidity proceedings, assignments, recordals, renewals. She has experience in successfully steering negotiations between parties over disputes on conflicting marks, resulting in mutually agreeable solutions. She is regularly engaged in reviewing and drafting various types of IP- related agreements.
